About The Project

Kathryn Sloat and Michelle Stockman first met as students playing in a chamber ensemble at Mannes College The New School for Music. They are both dedicated to exploring new music for their instruments, and decided to team up as The Half Moon Project to further this interest.

The Halve Maen (“Half Moon”) was a Dutch East India Company ship, captained by Henry Hudson, an Englishman in the service of the Dutch Republic. The ship was the first to sail up what is now the Hudson River from present day New York Harbor to Albany. Voyaging in the wake of this historic boat, the New York City based Half Moon Project seeks to continue navigating uncharted territory in the world of chamber music, challenging the boundaries and stereotypes of standard instrumentations.

Saturday, March 17th, 2018: Pour divers instruments

The Half Moon Project will be performing contemporary music for flute, viola, and harp, as well as the piece that started it all: Claude Debussy's Sonata. Near the end of his life, Debussy started a collection of sonatas "pour divers instruments." Meant to be a cycle of six pieces, the composer passed away having only completed three: sonatas for cello and piano, violin and piano, and for flute, harp, and viola.
